COMMUNITY \ id7 in the News \ id7 announces the VS-fusion bootable software stack:

The software stack transforms commodity servers into low latency, ultra high performance, solid state shared storage devices and caching SAN accelerator appliances: Now the power of Solid State Resources can be deployed and shared by servers across the network through powerful virtualisation & caching technology.

MANCHESTER, UK, 20 June 2011 - id7, the UK based developer of intelligent interconnecting storage technologies, have today announced the VS-fusion is now generally available as a bootable software stack, designed to cost effectively bring solid state performance into the mainstream storage market, boosting performance up to 1 million IOPS to feed the most hungry applications and demanding virtualised environments.

Today, everything hinges on storage. I/O intensive applications and virtual infrastructures can place extraordinary demands on traditional hard disk based arrays. Too often, Storage Area Networks (SANs) slow down centralised IT operations not because they are poorly designed or built, but because they are physically constrained by the hard disk based arrays beneath. Enter id7’s VS-fusion appliance, available as either a hardware appliance or the bootable software stack that allows customers to choose the appliance server platform, from either Dell, HP, IBM or Supermicro, to deliver an ultra-high performance solid state shared storage device and front-end caching appliance right across the SAN.

The VS-fusion combines Fusion-io technology and id7’s advanced virtualisation and cache algorithms as a SAN connected appliance to boost existing and new HDD Storage Array IO performance (IOPS) by up to 100 times whilst also significantly reducing latency. The net result is that demanding business applications, such as Oracle, SQL & Exchange, run significantly faster and deliver incredible performance boosts to existing VM and VDI environments across the entire SAN.

Mark Klarzynski, CTO id7, reveals more: “Earlier in 2011, id7 announced the VS-fusion hardware appliance incorporating this caching accelerator software. What we have done now is to take the technology to the next level, extracting the software stack, so that

end users are free to make server platform selection from either Dell, HP, IBM or

Supermicro.”

Tyler Smith, Vice President of Alliances, Fusion-io, comments on the relationship.

“Fusion-io pioneered the use of flash memory deployed via the server through PCI

Express to provide ultra high performance for even the most demanding applications.

We are excited to continue along this path of innovation with id7 to offer high availability

shared storage that allows multiple hosts to benefit from the same performance boost.

We chose to collaborate with id7 because they share our view that performance is best

maximized by seamlessly connecting directly to the host or SAN and providing multiple

connectivity options including Fibre, iSCSI and InfiniBand.”

Neil Munday, CEO id7 comments, “What has been achieved here is to allow our

customers that have existing relationships with Fusion-io’s server vendor partners to

purchase the hardware components direct from them. The VS-fusion software stack

simply boots on the server and creates a VS-fusion appliance. The performance benefits

will allow existing arrays, comprising slow high capacity SATA or fibre drive SAN storage

to be reutilised and accelerated to SSD level performance. Furthermore we have

overcome the restrictive price burden of running multiple SSDs that initially daunted

many organisations. It’s a compelling message in these resource restricted times.”

MSRP Pricing for the VS-fusion software stack is £18,000 per server appliance and

£35,990 to £47,495 for the hardware appliance with capacity ranges from 320GB to

1280GB respectively which includes Fibre Channel, iSCSI and InfiniBand connectivity as

a default. The VS-fusion is available to purchase now through id7’s network of direct

premier partners.
